"In this photo made available by the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, Archbishop Stanislaw Dsiwisz, right, places a white veil over the face of late Pope John Paul II as Archbishop Piero Marini looks on, prior to closing the coffin for burial in the grottos beneath St. Peter's Basilica, at the Vatican, Friday, April 8, 2005. The grottos form a cramped underground cemetery beneath St. Peter's Basilica where pontiffs throughout the ages, royals and even an emperor have been laid to rest"
"The sun is seen shining through a flag with a picture of the late Pope John Paul II in Krakow, Poland April 8, 2005. Alarm sirens wailed and church bells tolled across Poland to mark the start of the funeral and more than 800,000 gathered in the Blonie public meadows in Krakow -- the southern Polish city where Karol Wojtyla served as archbishop before becoming Pope"this is a truly amazing sight. millions of people from around the world have migrated to st.peters square to celebrate his life and to pay their respects. world leaders, world dignitaries, presidents, kings, queens, prime ministers, people of other religions from around the world have shown to pay their respects. not only was he the leader of the catholic church but he was a great man who firmly believed in the goodness of mankind. he was and is an inspiration to us all. we should all aspire to think and behave this way.
for a while during the funeral mass the crowd cheered for about 5 minutes chanting "sancto".
its touching.
this is definitely one of the prouder moments of the catholic church.
at times i have my doubts about my religion, but its moments like this that reaffirm my faith.
im not the most religious person, but this is what i believe christianity is; coming together despite differences.
the funeral mass is ending as i type this.
theyre carrying his casket back into the bascillica and the crowd from around the world is cheering.
i love the simplicity of this cofin.
and humility of his final burial wishes.
unlike the other popes who are put in a...forgive me if i dont know the word for this, its above ground though...pope john paul II wanted to be buried in the earth with a simple stone tablet.
"A teary-eyed Filipino nun sits in front of a huge portrait of Pope John Paul II as she joins thousands of other Catholic devotees at Manila's Rizal Park for the funeral mass Friday April 8, 2005 for Holiness who died Saturday at age 84. The funeral for Pope John Paul II is believed to be the one of the largest Western religious gatherings in modern times."
"Devotees sing religious songs as they bid farewell to Pope John Paul II to coincide with the Vatican funeral for His Holiness Friday April 8, 2005 at Manila's Rizal Park."mourning aorund the world.
wow.
its intriguing to me how im overcome with emotion about this.
didnt even know the man.
but see thats the thing
he made himself known to us all
he wanted to be the worlds friend, and that he is.
and he'll be missed.
as i sign off bells are being rung at st peters square
the pallbearers are holding the casket right before its brought into the bascillica, away from cameras...and the crowd has been cheering for minutes.
tears, shouts of adoration, flags waving, applause...
as the bells continue to chime, the crowd keeps going.
what a humbling vision
see? humans
can be civil.
